01The agreement
These terms are between Portreeve (“we”, “us”) and you, and they govern your use of portreeve.com, the Portreeve dashboard, API, SDKs, and everything else we operate (together, “the service”). By creating an account or sending the API a request, you accept them. Portreeve is a business tool: you must be at least 18 and using it for a business or professional purpose. If you signed a separate agreement with us — a design-partner agreement, for example — that agreement wins wherever the two conflict.
02What the service is
Portreeve screens events you send — signups, trial starts and conversions, checkout attempts, logins — and returns a verdict of allow, review, or block with the reasons behind it. A verdict is a signal, not a decision. You choose what to enforce and how; we never act on your users directly and never contact them. The service is designed to fail open: if it is slow or unreachable, the default integration lets your traffic through rather than blocking it.
03Your account and keys
- Keep your account information accurate and your credentials secure.
- Secret API keys belong on your servers, never in client-side code. You are responsible for all requests made with your keys; if a key leaks, roll it in the dashboard immediately and tell us.
- Don’t share accounts or resell access to the API.
04Your users' data
To screen an event you send us metadata about your user — email, IP, device signals, payment metadata. You promise that:
- you have the legal right and a lawful basis to send us that data for abuse screening;
- your own privacy policy discloses your use of service providers that process it, and you handle your users’ privacy requests (we’ll assist — see our privacy policy);
- you won’t send us data the API isn’t built for — no full card numbers, no government IDs, no sensitive-category data beyond what the documented fields ask for.
You own your data. You grant us the license needed to process it to provide the service, including the hashed cross-customer abuse signals described in the privacy policy — which you can opt out of at any time.
05Acceptable use
Don’t use Portreeve to:
- break the law, or screen people for purposes that are unlawful where you operate (including unlawful discrimination);
- probe, scrape, overload, or interfere with the service, or evade its rate limits;
- attempt to re-identify hashed data, or extract data about anyone else’s traffic;
- build or train a competing scoring dataset from our verdicts;
- resell or white-label verdicts without a written agreement with us.
We can suspend access that threatens the service or other customers, with notice where practical.
06Fees
The free tier is free — no card required. Paid plans are billed by Stripe at the prices posted on the pricing page, based on billable events, plus any applicable taxes. Prices can change with at least 30 days’ notice; changes never apply retroactively. If a renewal payment fails we’ll retry and email you before anything is suspended.
07Beta, honestly
Portreeve is in open beta. It works, it’s monitored, and it will change based on what its users need. During beta there is no uptime SLA. What we do commit to: the API contract is versioned and we don’t ship breaking changes to an integrated version without notice, the service fails open by design, and known issues get fixed fast.
08Ownership
We own the service — the software, models, rules, and documentation. You get a non-exclusive right to use it while these terms are in force. You own your data and your integration. If you send us feedback or ideas, we can use them without obligation — that’s what they’re for.
09No warranty
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Abuse detection is probabilistic: we do not promise that every abusive event will be caught, or that no legitimate user will ever be flagged. Enforcement decisions — especially on review — are yours, and you shouldn’t rely on Portreeve as your only fraud control.
10Limits on liability
To the maximum extent the law allows: neither side is liable to the other for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost profits, revenue, or data; and our total liability under these terms is capped at the greater of the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $100 USD. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.
11Indemnity
You’ll defend us against third-party claims that arise from data you had no right to send us, or from your use of the service in breach of section 05 — and we’ll do the same for claims that the service itself, used as documented, infringes someone’s intellectual property.
12Ending it
You can stop using Portreeve and close your account at any time, no reason needed. We can suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms, with notice where practical. After termination, ask and we’ll delete your data within 30 days, hashed identity keys included, as described in the privacy policy. Sections 08–11 and 13 survive termination.
13The rest
- Changes: we can update these terms; material changes are emailed to account holders at least 30 days before they take effect, and continued use after that is acceptance.
- Governing law: these terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and disputes belong exclusively to the state and federal courts located in Delaware.
- Assignment: you need our written OK to assign these terms; we may assign them as part of a merger or sale, with notice.
- Severability: if a clause is unenforceable, the rest stand.
- Entire agreement: these terms plus the privacy policy (and any signed agreement, which prevails) are the whole deal.
